25 years old – Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, started in January 2001.
Wide subject coverage – The English language version now has over 7 million articles. And that is one of its strengths. If you want to find out about something, there is a good chance there is some coverage. And often there is more depth in companion articles about subsections or related topics.
Detailed, and references support going deeper – Some articles include a lot of technical details, which might be hard to find elsewhere. There are frequent references detailing sources for the information.
Accurate – In my experience the error rate is low.
I recommend the talk pages – Every topic entry has a talk page, which I have often found interesting and informative.
Humans can collaborate! – Most of the work producing Wikipedia is done by volunteer editors.
Independent – Wikipedia is published (online) by Wikimedia Foundation, based in San Francisco. It is independent of any political or commercial interests.
Flawed – Humans are involved, so there are disagreements; there is vandalism; and mistakes have been made. Wikipedia has generally responded reasonably, and has developed policy and procedures to handle misleading contributors and resolve disputes.
No clutter, no pressure – Wikipedia is not trying to sell you something. It does not gather our data. There is no advertising.
Can be shared – Wikipedia has a Creative Commons BY-SA copyright licence, which means copying and sharing is allowed (you can look up the conditions).
A gift to us – It has been prepared with generosity. I think it is one of the great achievements of civilization. And it often leaves me more at peace.
Jim said Wikipedia is one of his favourite treasures. But he said to wait, because he hasn't quite finished reading it.
